When I began creating skincare products for Amaltaskin, it quickly became essential for me to source the finest ingredients and ensure they were as locally grown as possible.
Almond oil was in my list of ingredients due to its remarkable benefits for dry and mature skin and hair, and I was eager to determine if it lived up to its reputation.
At first, I received what was claimed to be cold-pressed almond oil, which was nearly clear and lacked any noticeable scent. It neither significantly improved my skin nor provided a luxurious sensation.
Therefore, I investigated more, as I was seeking ingredients with a low carbon footprint, which meant California almonds were not suitable.
By a stroke of luck, an aunt came back from Kashmir and gave us these small almonds with a coarse texture. They had a strong flavor and tasted oily when eaten.
Through my research, I discovered that these almonds, called 'Gurbandi almonds,' originally came from Afghanistan and are now commonly cultivated in Kashmir.
These were rich in nutrients, essential fats, and antioxidants, unlike the processed and mass-produced ones from California.
Later, I discovered another type known as Mamra almonds. These were also small but featured a distinct concave base and were much sweeter than Gurbandi. Cultivated in Iran and Afghanistan, they possessed the highest nutritional value. Their production was limited, making them very costly.
Ayurvedic scriptures mention the Gurbandi Almonds for their improved brain function, heart and skin health.
These almonds help decrease puffiness and dark circles, moisturise the skin, enhance hair density, prevent hair loss, and minimize split ends!
I had to find them!
After getting duped a few times and failing to procure the real thing, I finally found a vendor who gave me this yellowish, slightly nutty flavoured oil sample that surprisingly melted into the skin in an instant. It was also three times more expensive than anything available in the regular market!
After testing and comparing and analysing it, I knew.
